Margins and paper size
The geometry package sets margins and the paper size in one line. Journals usually fix these for you through their class — only change them for your own documents.
\usepackage[a4paper, margin=2.5cm]{geometry}Two columns and spacing
The class option twocolumn sets the whole document in two columns; multicol gives columns for a part of it. setspace changes line spacing (e.g. \onehalfspacing for theses).
\documentclass[11pt, twocolumn]{article}
\usepackage{setspace}
\onehalfspacingHeaders and footers
With fancyhdr you choose what goes at the top and bottom of each page.
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\pagestyle{fancy}
\fancyhead[L]{My thesis}
\fancyhead[R]{\thepage}Try it: the full example compiles as it is. Open as a project
