Use CiteTeX in Claude
Connect CiteTeX to Claude and work on your papers from a Claude chat, with your Claude plan: no API key, nothing extra to pay. Claude can search papers in CiteTeX’s databases, read and edit your LaTeX projects, compile them and fix the errors. Your changes show up live in the CiteTeX editor.
Connect (claude.ai, Claude desktop and mobile)
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it CiteTeX and paste this address:
https://citetex.com/mcp - Click Connect. CiteTeX opens: sign in if asked, check that the request comes from Claude, and click Allow.
- In a chat, turn CiteTeX on in the tools menu and ask, for example: “Find recent papers on ECG denoising and add the three best to my thesis bibliography.”
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner may need to add the connector for the organization first.
Claude Code
Run this in a terminal, then type /mcp in Claude Code to sign in:
claude mcp add --transport http citetex https://citetex.com/mcp
What Claude can do
- Search papers (OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, arXiv, Crossref, Europe PMC, CORE) and get a BibTeX entry for each real record.
- See your projects and read their files, as they are right now.
- Edit files, create files and new projects, where you are the owner or an editor. Viewers’ projects stay read-only.
- Compile a project and read the errors with file and line.
- See your library of saved papers.
Safety and privacy
- Before Claude’s first change in a while, CiteTeX saves a version of the project: undo anything from History.
- Claude sees only what it asks for in a chat you start; what it reads is sent to Anthropic to answer you, under your Claude account’s terms.
- Disconnect at any time in CiteTeX Settings → Use in Claude: access stops at once.
